I was working a new client today and he got me thinking about putting new life into an old sofa piece… The sofas and sectionals that I produce all come in 6 levels of cushion comfort. Soft, medium & hard in both regular foam and down wrapped foam. His issue with his old sofa was that although he liked the style and the fabric of what he had, it was killing his back to sit on it anymore because the foam had worn out.
Sounds pretty simple to fix, but it is actually hard to find a good foam supplier that will sell to the general public. There are places like foamorder.com that sell on line and you just have to give them the size you need. But sometimes that is an expensive way to go. Why pay $90 a cushion to fix up a 6 cushion couch.
You can also go to really good fabric stores and they usually have a nice source for purchasing foam. Why throw out a perfectly good sofa just because the cushions are bad? If your really on a budget, you can find old cushions that are slightly bigger than your cushions and just cut them to fit. And jazz up that old sofa with a few throw pillows.
Another problem with the feel is that the springs are worn out. You can make a simple fix by taking a piece of plywood and cutting it to size to go under the cushions, and over the springs. That will give you a really good platform to rest the cushions on and can give you more time to enjoy the sofa that you love so much. Of course, at some point your sofa will have to go to the great living room in the sky, but try to get as much use out of it as you can…
