Make Sure Your Office Chair Has the Features You Need

Many people these days spend much of their time sitting in an office or in front of a computer at home. This has led to an increase in health problems related to poor posture and repetitive movements. These can include carpal tunnel syndrome, and also chronic pain in your neck or back.

Choosing a good chair will help you to avoid most of these issues. A well designed ergonomic office chair is the ultimate in support and comfort. However, a well built chair with proper features can be perfectly acceptable for most people. The following features are essential for a comfortable task chair.

1. Backrest adjustment levers can help you find the right position to avoid aches and pains when you sit a lot. Typically, there are three adjustable settings for the backrest. Adjusting the backrest height lets you find a comfortable position that supports your lumbar region. The backrest tilt adjusts the angle for your comfort while still providing support for your back. The horizontal backrest movement adjusts from side to side, making the chair a little deeper.

2. Chair height adjustment is essential in an office chair. Generally, an office chair will have a pneumatic lever to let you adjust the chair’s height while you’re sitting. At the proper height, your thighs should be level with the floor and your feet resting comfortably on the ground.

3. The chair’s seat pan should feature a rounded edge. This will prevent uncomfortable pressure at the back of the legs or behind the knees. There should be a space about the size of a clenched fist between the back of your knees and front of the chair. This allows proper circulation in your legs. You should be able to tilt the seat pan to get the most comfortable position and take off pressure from the back of your thighs. The fabric should be durable and allow for proper ventilation.

4. If you choose a chair with armrests, they need to be adjusted so they don’t get in your way. Armrests aren’t normally needed for keyboard use, but they’re very useful if you use a mouse a lot. You should be able to adjust the height and position, and they should have sufficient padding.

5. Another critical factor is stability. The best ergonomic chairs will have a five pronged base. If the chair only has four prongs, it’s less stable and more likely to tip over when you lean.
